La Horde

Max Ernst, regarded as a primary pioneer of first Dada and later Surrealism, played a big role in the development of automated- and generative techniques in visual art. Two of these techniques, grattage and frottage, were vital for the creation of visual texture for La Horde. 

Grattage; a painting technique that involves laying a canvas prepared with a layer of oil paint over a textured object and then scraping the paint off to create an interesting and unexpected surface.

Frottage; a method of creative production that involves creating a rubbing of a textured surface using a pencil or other drawing material.

This piece is a composition made with the intention to add to the experience of viewing Max Ernst’s surrealist work; La Horde. Simultaneously, the piece is the result of an attempt to translate the concept and context of the painting to the time-domain (the medium of sound).
